Australian constitution was adopted in 1990 on 9th july.The first independent parliament was inaugurated in Melbourne in 1901 which was later transferred to Canberra.In 1942 Westminster Adoption Act enforced complete autonomy of Australia while the Australia Act in 1986 cut off all marks of British power.
CULTURE:- The original Australian culture is Anglo-Celtic,though the culture is strongly influenced by American culture,and neighbouring Asian countries. Literature, cinema, opera,music, painting,theatre,dance,crafts all have achieved worldwide recognition.The Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne is the first building to be recorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.Australian music ranges from classical,jazz to pop. Ballet is very popular among dances.
Among the popular sports,cricket, hockey, netball, rugby league,rugby union, cycling,rowing,swimming,football, horse racing, soccer,motor racing are important. Grand Slam Australian Open tennis tournament is the biggest tournament of tennis. Australia has been the four time world champion in cricket.1938, 1962, 1982, and 2006 Commonwealth Games are also organized in Australia.
In 1973,Patrick White won the Nobel Prize in Literature.Two Australian renowned writers are Colleen McCullough David Williamson and David Malouf.
